Belly Laugh, Belly Growl
An exposé of the abdomen in culture, history, and religion
asking the question: why flatten your stomach?

VIII. BIRTH: WHAT A CONCEPT!

Oh God!
Oh Goddess!

In ancient days, humans pictured the universe
in the shape of a woman's body.
They honored the power of the
Great Mother's big belly
to birth, nurture, and renew the world.

Over time, invaders vanquished these cultures,
but allowed images of the sacred female to remain
even within their male domain,
to placate the people they had conquered.

The victors appointed a team of male gods
to head up the various departments in the universe,
casting goddettes, or goddesses,
as wives, sisters, and secretaries.

Down-sizing the status of the sacred female
continues
to the present day...

XIII. WOULD YOU HEAL THE WORLD?

There's a wise, wise woman who says:
there's enough love in your heart,
and your heart, and your heart
to heal the world, beginning with
the universe who is you.
Would you heal the earth?

You bear the world within your belly!

Take a moment now to cradle your belly,
placing your hands
over your lower abdomen.
Allow your hands to register
how your belly expands as it receives the breath,
how it sinks inward toward your spine
as it releases the breath.
Like an ocean tide,
like waves at the seashore;
like a pulse; a heartbeat.
