Gloria Said It

Gloria Steinem said it decades ago, girls:
We're all female impersonators.

Who knows—
who knows what it means to be a woman breathing,
consigned as we are to blush and shadow?

When you look between your legs
do you see shreds of the pink plastic wrappers
      packaging oh-so-sanitary napkins?

Or do you discover the red thread
that spins through generations
cording and recording our origins
in the wombs of our African mothers,
in the moon-bleeding belly
of our Ancestor Woman?

An African woman was drumming and dancing
through my dreams last night:
      she was teaching me
      to keep the beat.

The Gate Of The Mysterious Female

There is a place in your body
that beckons to you
       Through this one-point
you enter into all the worlds

Deeper than thinking,
deeper than feeling,
alive with the breath
it tells you of your deepest dreaming
       echoes ancient drumming
       attends to your truth

There is a place in your body
that gives birth to stars
that is the end of all longing,
       repletion of every emptiness,
              the pivot around which
              all your worlds are turning

There is a place in your body
where you are born
       where you belong
       where you are welcomed
       with all-encompassing love

Imagine that!
